David Shaw...This is your Life!
The “This is your Life” was a surprise element to the company’s Christmas party which was held at their offices on Chester Road in Stretford. Toby Ballion, who took the role of Michel Aspel, presented David with an overview of his life to date and introduced a few VIP surprise guests from years gone by!
David was born in 1937 in Davyhulme, Manchester and attended Urmston Grammar School.
David’s entrepreneurial skills and determination in the 1960’s led Gleave to expand into a different market sector and a new warehouse was opened at Longford Trading Estate, Stretford. The extra capacity meant Gleave could stock a wider range of tools, including machine tools which enabled the company to diversify.
Determined to survive and prosper during the recession in the 1980’s David looked overseas and started to bid for work at World Bank and European funded projects. During this time Gleave won their first two export contracts in Syria equipping the Aleppo and Damascus Universities. It was during this period that David’s son, John, Gleave’s current Managing Director, joined the family business.
Gleave still operates the same lean structure and efficient working systems used in the 1980 recession which has again helped guide them through the current tough business environment.
The 1990s’s saw a streak of lucrative wins for the company including the Ministry of Defence, BT and National Grid.
David said: “I was completely shocked and amazed; I had no idea that this had all been planned! It was fantastic to see faces old and new under one roof, these people have helped mould Gleave into the dynamic company it is today.”
The evening was a double celebration for Gleave who celebrated their 175th anniversary.
